ZHONG LAB
The research group is a dedicated scientific team under the Reservoir Stimulation and Enhancement Innovation Program at Southwest Petroleum University. Led by Professor Jianchun Guo and jointly guided by Professor Deyi Hou from Tsinghua University, the team focuses on major challenges in frontier oil and gas development, including deep formations, deep-sea environments, shale gas, coalbed methane, and high-sulfur reservoirs. Core research areas include the intelligent development of advanced reservoir stimulation fluids, integrated geo-engineering applications, and risk control for reservoirs and the environment, with an emphasis on digital intelligence and sustainable development.Currently, the group focuses on the following three directions:
- Development of fracturing and acidizing fluids, chemicals, and materials
- Geological, chemical, and biological data analysis for fracturing and acidizing
- Reservoir and environmental risk control in fracturing and acidizing operations
The Reservoir Stimulation and Enhancement Innovation Team at Southwest Petroleum University is supported by the national “Double First-Class” discipline in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering. It is recognized as an Innovation Training Team by the Ministry of Education and one of the first Youth Science and Technology Innovation Research Teams in Sichuan Province. The team consists of 18 full-time researchers, including 5 professors; 80% hold Ph.D. degrees, and 70% have over one year of overseas research experience. With expertise spanning petroleum engineering, geotechnical engineering, fluid mechanics, and chemical engineering, the team leverages its stable and complementary research directions to drive interdisciplinary innovation.
The team specializes in the theory and engineering technologies for production enhancement through fracturing and acidizing in low-permeability and tight oil and gas reservoirs. In recent years, it has achieved notable progress in areas such as molecular design and preparation of working fluids, physico-chemical coupling of fracturing materials and geotechnical formations, fluid–rock mechanical interactions, and novel stimulation technologies. Emphasizing international collaboration, the team has established strong partnerships with top universities including the University of Texas at Austin, University of Oklahoma, Texas A&M University, University of Utah, University of Western Australia, Clausthal University of Technology, and the University of Calgary. Team members have participated in over 30 international conferences across the U.S., U.K., South Korea, and UAE. Its graduate students have won first place in the SPE Asia Pacific Oil & Gas Conference student paper contest for three consecutive years, and received over 30 First Prizes including one Excellence Cup in the China Petroleum Engineering Design Competition. They have also achieved top awards in national competitions such as the China Postgraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling and the Future Road Energy Innovation Research Challenge, along with honors like “China’s College Student of the Year” and “Outstanding Graduate of Sichuan Province.”

The research group is actively recruiting graduate students with a focus on cultivating talents who can
take on expert and leadership roles in research institutions, government agencies, and the petrochemical
industry. We are a diverse team, welcoming students interested in both wet and dry experiments to
receive training in this laboratory. Individuals with backgrounds in environmental science, geology,
chemistry, and proficiency in computer science and mathematics are encouraged to join us. We seek
applicants who are passionate about research, possess innovative and flexible thinking, have excellent
English proficiency (CET6, TOEFL 85, IELTS 6.5), effective communication and presentation skills, and
the ability to express their views clearly. Applicants should actively engage in team communication and
collaboration.
Note: Foreign applicants are advised to consult with the International Cooperation and Exchange Office
of Southwest Petroleum University before applying.
